AMH or Anti-Mullerian Hormone is produced by the ovarian granulosa cells and correlates with ovarian reserve. It is predictive of the number of eggs that a woman has and stays relatively stable throughout her menstrual cycle (only fluctuating 1-2 notches). What AMH does not tell you is about the quality of your remaining eggs.
The reference ranges for AMH are:
- Optimal fertility – 28.6-48.5
- Satisfactory fertility – 15.7-28.6
- Low fertility – 2.2-15.7
- Very low fertility – 0.0-2.2
Scores of under 5 make IVF less likely to succeed. However, it is our experience that many women with a ‘low’ or ‘very low’ AMH can get pregnant naturally and, even with a low AMH score, often the best chance of achieving pregnancy is to conceive naturally if you are able.
Our Approach to Low AMH
At the Natural Fertility Centre we have had several women with AMH scores of less than 0.5 conceive naturally and go on to give birth to healthy, beautiful babies. Our approach is to ensure that the remaining eggs are of the best possible quality possible through a program of nutrition (diet and food supplements), Chinese or Western herbs and acupuncture. We also encourage male partners to work with us to ensure that their sperm are as healthy and motile as possible to improve the chance of conception.
