Ibuprofen warning to pregnant women

New research by Canadian scientists shows that the risk of miscarriage is doubled with the use of ibuprofen in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.  This is something the Natural Fertility Centre has been telling women about for the last few years and indeed we also advise women who are trying to conceive to avoid ibuprofen.  It’s good to see that this study has brought wider press coverage to this issue.

The First 1000 Days: A Legacy for Life

Nutritional Therapy
A three part series on BBC Radio 4, The First 1000 Days: A Legacy for Life, about the importance of the first 1000 days of life, from conception through the early years, discusses the evidence that the nutritional and environmental influences at this time program one’s health as an adult.

This is a ‘must-listen’ for anyone hoping to have a child, as it really impresses the importance of both parents’ health on the future wellbeing of their offspring and future generations to come.

New Clue to Male Infertility Found

Male infertility clues foundScientists have discovered that changes in a gene that could account for many cases of male infertility. The gene is responsible for the production of a protein helps sperm to swim through a woman’s cervical mucus, and changes to the gene could reduce sperm motility and therefore reduce chances of conception.

A study of more than 500 married couples in China found that women who had partners with two copies of the defective gene (one from the mother and one from the father) were less likely to get pregnant. The women also took longer to get pregnant by a couple of months.

New Research on Mobile Phones and Male Infertility

Researchers at the Queen’s University in Canada have found that, while mobile phone use appears to increase male testosterone levels, it may also lead to poor sperm quality and reduced fertility. This effect is thought to occur even with phones on ‘standby’ mode and men with fertility problems are encouraged to avoid carrying their phones on their person, instead keeping them in a bag or briefcase.

Here is a link to the Queen’s University website and another article in the India Times.

‘Groundbreaking’ male infertility test could bring hope

Male Infertility - SpermResearchers at Queen’s University, Belfast, have devised a new test that measures DNA fragmentation in sperm, a factor which could play a big part in male infertility.

The new test is the first of it’s kind and can show up problems with the DNA within the sperm cells, which is vital for fertilization and proper development of the foetus.

The issue of DNA fragmentation is an area of debate amongst fertility experts, but after years of research it is hoped that the new test will enable fertility treatments to be more individualised and therefore more successful.

More information on this story in The Daily Mail and on the Spire Healthcare’s IVF Scotland website, and some of the research from the Belfast team is available here.
